Wrist Protection
A few days ago I was hitting infield to my son’s team and a ball was thrown into our young catcher on a one hop. The catcher put his glove down but the ball took a bad bounce and hit right off his glove hand wrist. Ouch! It looked painful and from his reaction it was.
I remembered back when I played infield I liked to wear a wrist band on my glove hand for this reason. If the ball was to take a bad hop and hit me in the wrist, I had some protection. I even remembered I had tried this leather strap that laced to my glove to cover my wrist. But, that device felt too cumbersome so I used the wristband. I recommended to the young catcher that he may want to consider getting a wrist band for his wrist.
I was looking around the web for that old style leather wrist protector. I saw that they make some catcher’s mitts with a guard but since it has been years, it seems like the leather lace up wrist guard is old technology. I did see that Evoshield makes a wrist guard that is a neoprene sleeve with a shield insert. I think this may be used a lot by hitters and may be a little overkill for a youth player. Whether it is this sleeve or a wrist band, I think my young catcher would have appreciated having some sort of protection that day.
